Most dog owners only think about a recall whistle the first time their dog disappears over a hill and doesn't come back when called. PawCall is the small, loud, pocket-flat thing you wish you'd had on you the day before.
This is a loud, audible whistle — not a silent ultrasonic one. Three small chambers in the head produce three different pitches; blown together they make a distinctive, layered tone that carries across a field, through wind, and over the kind of background noise you get on a busy park or a coastal path. Your dog learns the sound. So does anyone within earshot, which matters the day you actually need help.
Built around the walk, not the gym
Most "dog training whistles" are tiny tubes that vanish into the bottom of a coat pocket. PawCall is a flat 70 × 27 mm slab — about the size and weight of two house keys stacked together — with a steel ball chain already attached. It clips to a rucksack strap, a lead loop, a belt, or a zip pull, and it stays where you put it. Seven millimetres thick means it doesn't print through a jacket pocket either.

A recall tool, not a magic trick
A whistle on its own won't train a dog. What it does is give you a sound your dog has never heard from anyone else, that you can produce identically every time, even when you're out of breath, even when you're cross, even when your voice has gone hoarse from shouting their name across a beach. Pair the whistle with the recall reward your dog already responds to, build the association at home and in the garden first, then take it onto the walk. Most owners who stick with it see a difference within a couple of weeks.

The body is moulded with the words "SURVIVAL WHISTLE" — that's the supplier's branding, embossed into the plastic. We've kept it because the product underneath is genuinely the loud, dual-purpose kind that hikers and dog walkers have always carried. We're not going to pretend it's something more certified than it is. It's a well-made plastic whistle with a very loud voice and a chain you can clip to anything.
Honest notes before you buy
It is loud. Don't blow it indoors, don't blow it directly next to your dog's head, and don't hand it to a small child without supervision. A recall whistle works because it carries — that means it carries to your eardrums too.
The chain is functional, not heirloom. The 150 mm steel ball chain is fine for clipping to a rucksack strap or a lead. If you want to wear it around your neck or wrist every day, swap it for a paracord lanyard — they cost a couple of pounds and last years.
Not a silent whistle. If you specifically want an ultrasonic / silent dog whistle, this isn't the right product — that's a different tool with different uses.
Two is the right number
One on the lead. One in the car, the walking bag, or the second person's pocket. Whistles get lost — they're small, they live outdoors, they end up on the wrong coat. Is this a silent dog whistle?
No. PawCall is an audible whistle — humans can hear it clearly, and it's loud. If you specifically want an ultrasonic silent whistle, this isn't that product.
Will it train my dog to come back?
A whistle is a tool, not a training method. Used consistently alongside the reward your dog already responds to (food, ball, praise) and built up gradually from the garden to the open field, most dogs develop a strong recall response within a few weeks. The advantage of a whistle over your voice is that it sounds the same every time, no matter how stressed or out of breath you are.
Why three holes?
Each chamber produces a slightly different pitch. Blown together they create a layered, distinctive sound that's harder to confuse with another whistle on the same path — useful both for dog recall (your dog learns the specific tone) and for signalling outdoors.
Is it loud enough to carry across a field?
Yes. We won't quote a specific decibel figure because we haven't independently tested it, but in normal outdoor conditions it carries comfortably across an open park or field. Wind direction and background noise will affect range, as with any whistle.
Is it waterproof?
The ABS plastic body and chamber design are unaffected by getting wet — rain, splashes, dropped in a puddle. The steel ball chain will eventually show surface rust if it lives outdoors permanently; if that bothers you, swap it for a paracord lanyard.
Can I use it for anything other than dog recall?
Yes — it's designed as a dual-use whistle. Hikers, runners, cyclists and walkers carry this style of whistle for personal safety: signalling for help, alerting people to your presence on blind trails, scaring off an aggressive loose dog.
