Why Frenchies are tricky to size
A French Bulldog is short in the body and wide in the chest, with a thick neck and a broad pair of shoulders. A hoodie picked by weight or by the size of another breed can end up snug across the chest but loose along the back, or the other way round. That is why we always ask for the chest measurement first.
How to measure your French Bulldog (2 minutes)
You only need a soft tape measure or a piece of string and a ruler. Have a treat ready and measure while your dog is standing.
- Chest: measure all the way round the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. This is the most important number.
- Neck: measure all the way round where a collar normally sits.
- Back length: measure along the back from the base of the collar to the base of the tail.
Keep the tape flat against the body and snug but not tight. You should be able to slide two fingers underneath.

So which size should my Frenchie pick?
- Chest around 50–53 cm: choose Medium.
- Chest around 54–58 cm: choose Large. This is where we see most adult French Bulldogs.
- Chest around 59–63 cm: choose XL, especially for a sturdy, well-built Frenchie.
- Between two sizes? Go up if your dog is broad in the chest or you like a roomier fit, and down if your dog is slim or the hoodie will be worn without anything underneath.
Remember that a hoodie should let your dog walk, sit and lie down comfortably. If you can only just squeeze it on, size up.
